Wolpyeong Church

History & origins

The formation of Wolpyeong Parish was closely connected with Ulsan's transformation into an industrial city. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia explains that, as industrial development and population growth accelerated from the 1960s, the number of Catholics in Ulsan also increased rapidly, making it difficult for the older Ulsan Parish alone to serve the new residential areas. The parish therefore secured land in Wolpyeong and prepared an independent pastoral center suited to the expanding city.

The official Catholic Directory in Korea records January 29, 1975, as the establishment date of Wolpyeong Parish. Soon afterward, parishioners began preparing for construction and celebrated Mass in a temporary tent church while work on the permanent building began in the spring. Construction continued into the following year, when the new church was completed. A local community of the Olivetan Benedictine Sisters was also established, strengthening the pastoral and communal foundation of the parish.

As the population and Catholic community of southern Ulsan continued to grow, Wolpyeong itself became a mother parish from which additional communities were separated. Yaeum Parish was established from Wolpyeong in 1984, and Wolpyeong later expanded its own facilities to respond to continued growth. In 1993, Okdong Parish was also separated to serve another developing residential area.

The history of Wolpyeong thus tells more than the story of a single church building. It illustrates how the pastoral structure of the Diocese of Busan was progressively subdivided as industrial Ulsan expanded. Wolpyeong was first created from the older Ulsan Parish and then became the point of origin for Yaeum and Okdong, showing how the local Church responded to urban growth by establishing new parish communities. The encyclopedia dates the first Mass in the temporary tent church to March 16, 1975, and the start of full church construction to April of that year. The new church was completed in May 1976, replacing the temporary liturgical space with a permanent sanctuary and showing concretely how the new Wolpyeong community established the physical foundation of an independent parish within a relatively short period.
