Tohyeon Catholic Church

History & origins

Tohyeon Parish was formed from Mangmi Parish as the Yeonsan-dong area of Busan urbanized and its Catholic population grew. The Catholic Times reported that the site of the present church was purchased on April 8, 1988, and that in July of the same year a request was made to the diocese for a new parish, which was approved as an independent parish responsible for part of Yeonsan-dong. The directory of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea records July 21, 1988, as the official date of establishment.

After the new parish began, the community moved forward with construction of a church that could provide adequate space for worship and parish life. Construction began in July 1990. After about one year and eight months, the new church was consecrated on February 23, 1992, in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Gabriel Lee Gap-su. According to the contemporary report, the building had one basement level and three stories above ground and included not only the main worship space but also halls, classrooms, and offices for the pastoral activities of the new parish.

This development reflects changes in the diocesan pastoral network during a period when Busan's residential areas were expanding. Dividing the territory of an older parish allowed Catholics to form a community centered on Mass and the sacraments closer to where they lived. Within a relatively short period after separating from Mangmi, Tohyeon established both an independent parish community and a dedicated church building as the foundation of local pastoral life.

Later alterations to the facilities or detailed renovation history are not sufficiently documented in the reliable public sources consulted and therefore have not been added. The verifiable core sequence runs from acquisition of the site and diocesan approval to construction and consecration of the new church, clearly showing the early process by which the Tohyeon community became established as an independent parish.
