Suyeong Catholic Church

History & origins

Suyeong Parish began when Bishop Augustine Cheong Myong-jo of the Diocese of Busan established it on January 11, 2002. It was separated from Mangmi Parish and initially served Suyeong-dong and part of Mangmi 2-dong. The Catholic Times recorded 725 households and 1,917 Catholics at the time of foundation, showing that the creation of a separate parish accompanied the growth of the Catholic population in this urban residential area.

As the community developed, plans moved forward for a new church. The parish demolished the previous building in November 2010 and began construction. The structural frame was completed in October 2011, and interior work was finished in April 2012. Parishioners supported the project with regular prayer and the Rosary, sharing spiritually in the process of building the church.

The new church was dedicated on May 27, 2012, in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Paul Hwang Cheol-soo. The building, one basement level and four stories above ground, included the worship space, rooms for education and community gatherings, residences for priests, and a convent. A Sacred Heart statue, a bell-tower clock, and sacred art centered on Saint Peter gave the church its distinctive religious imagery. The dedication marked an important stage in the development of the independent parish community that had begun in 2002.
