Sunjung Mission Station

History & origins

The Catholic community at Sunjeong grew out of the tradition of hidden Catholic villages during the era of persecution. A diocesan reflection for the centenary records that a Catholic village had formed here around 1860. After the Korea–France Treaty of 1886 and its ratification in 1887 effectively ended nationwide state persecution, Catholics who had lived in secluded mountain areas were increasingly able to move closer to villages and form public mission-station communities; the same transition took place in the Eonyang area.

The faithful established a public place where they could pray together and celebrate Mass, and on December 16, 1913, the mission-station building was dedicated in the presence of Bishop Florian Demange, the first bishop of the Diocese of Daegu. That date later became the reference point for Sunjeong’s centenary. The mission station served not only as a liturgical place for local Catholics but also as a retreat site for the Busan Catholic Association, the predecessor of today’s diocesan lay apostolate council, and as a place of rest for missionaries.

As the community grew, Gilcheon Mission Station was separated in the lower village in 1958. Later, however, industrial development in Ulsan and the broader urban migration of the 1970s drew many residents and Catholics away, greatly reducing the size of the community. A mission station that had once been large enough to establish another community was transformed into a small group maintaining the continuity of local faith.

In December 2013, a Mass marked the centenary of the 1913 dedication, and the Diocese of Busan reviewed the history again in its bulletin the following year. The history of Sunjeong thus traces a path from a persecuted Catholic village to a public mission station, through growth and division, and then through decline during industrialization, while continuing to preserve the memory of faith in the region.
