About this place

Songjeong Catholic Church is the parish church of Songjeong Parish in the Udong District of the Diocese of Busan. It serves as the center of liturgical and sacramental life, catechesis, and community activity for Catholics in the Songjeong area of Haeundae-gu. The Diocese of Busan’s official parish directory lists Songjeong as a parish of the Udong District and confirms that it is presently cared for as an independent parish community in the Songjeong area.

Songjeong lies in a living area where eastern Haeundae meets the neighboring Gijang region. Beyond the district’s familiar identity as a coastal destination, the parish provides a stable Catholic community in which local residents can continue their life of faith. Visitors can therefore understand the place not simply as a church building, but as a formally established parish of the Diocese of Busan where worship, fellowship, and faith formation are sustained.

History & origins

Songjeong Parish was established by the Diocese of Busan on October 5, 2007. According to a contemporary report in the Catholic Times, it was created by separation from Holy Family Parish. Its original territory included all of Songjeong-dong in Haeundae-gu as well as Sirang-ri, Dangsa-ri, Seoksan-ri, and Nae-ri in Gijang-eup, Gijang-gun. The first recorded location was San 53-49, Songjeong-dong, showing that the parish community began at a site different from the present church.

The division created an independent pastoral community for Catholics living along the eastern edge of Haeundae and the boundary with Gijang. With a parish established apart from the former territory of Holy Family Parish, local Catholics gained a closer base for regular liturgy and the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.

The Diocese of Busan now lists Songjeong as a parish in the Udong District. The precise date of the move from the first site to the present church and the details of the church-building process were not sufficiently documented in reliable primary sources found in this review, so they are not included here. On the evidence available, the history can be traced with confidence from the parish’s separation from Holy Family Parish in 2007 to its continuing life as an independent parish today.
