Seomyeon Cathedral

History & origins

The background to the establishment of Seomyeon Parish lies in the population growth of central Busan after the Korean War. As the number of Catholics in Bujeon-dong and Jeonpo-dong increased, the distance to existing parishes became a practical difficulty. From the mid-1950s, local Catholics therefore prepared for a new church, secured land, and petitioned the diocese to establish a parish. After several years of preparation, Seomyeon Parish was erected on December 11, 1960, from portions of the territories of Busanjin and Yangjeong parishes.

With a church in place at the time of establishment, organized parish life began in earnest. During the 1960s the Legion of Mary became established, and in 1966 Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres were assigned to the parish. A kindergarten opened the following year, expanding the parish's educational work. These foundations supported the organization and formation of the Catholic community during a period of rapid urban population growth.

In the 1970s several new parishes were successively separated from Seomyeon. Jeonpo Parish became independent in 1972, Gaya in 1973, and Danggam in 1978; Seongji Parish was also separated that same year. The repeated adjustment of parish boundaries and creation of new communities in response to changing population and living patterns shows Seomyeon's role as an important mother parish in the expansion of Catholic life in central Busan.

Even as these divisions continued, the parish developed a library, youth activities, and parish publications to support faith formation and communication within the community. The history of Seomyeon Parish is therefore closely tied to the way one urban parish served a broad population and gradually gave rise to new local communities as the city grew.
