Sangseonpil Mission Station

History & origins

The official mission-station history of Eonyang Parish traces Catholic life in the Sangseonpil area back to the first half of the nineteenth century. It records a visit by Fr. Chastan around 1839, visits and sacramental ministry by Fr. Daveluy around 1845–1849, and the gathering of believers in the area around 1850 in the context of Fr. Thomas Choe Yang-eop's ministry in Gyeongsang Province. These accounts suggest that Sangseonpil functioned as a center of a mountain Catholic community even before its status as a formal local unit became clear.

Through periods of persecution and regional change, Catholic families settled in Sangseonpil, and by the late nineteenth century the mission community appears more clearly organized. The Eonyang Parish record names Bernard Han Gwang-ho as a mission-station leader in 1893 and explains that descendants of Catholic families in Sangseonpil spread to places such as Haseonpil, Tapgok, and Eonyang, helping form new Christian villages. A single mountain mission community thus contributed to the growth of Catholic settlements in the surrounding area.

Urbanization and population movement later brought change even to this old mountain mission station. The official account notes periods when only a small number of Catholic households remained, yet the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea still lists Sangseonpil separately today as a mission station of the Diocese of Busan. Its history is therefore best understood not chiefly through the date of a church building, but through the continuity from nineteenth-century missionary visits and Catholic settlement to the spread of neighboring Christian villages and the survival of the mission-station name through demographic change.
