Samgye Catholic Church

History & origins

Samgye Parish was established on September 17, 2004, according to the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea. It is a relatively young parish that developed with the growth of northern Gimhae, and the official directory shows its continuing place within the Samgye district of the Diocese of Busan. Its patron is the Korean Martyrs, a choice that gave the newly established local community the witness of Korea's martyrs as a spiritual point of reference.

Detailed records of church construction or territorial division were not sufficiently confirmed in this research, but diocesan sources do show the parish broadening its contact with the local community. In 2015 it held a “Cultural Performance with Local Residents” inside the parish church, which the diocese described as part of a cultural mission project. Another record from the same year notes local residents being invited into the church for a cultural performance, showing the parish using its liturgical space as a place of encounter with the neighborhood.

The verifiable history of Samgye can therefore be summarized as beginning with the establishment of the parish in 2004, followed by the development of a community under the patronage of the Korean Martyrs that has widened the meeting point between parish life and cultural mission in the surrounding area. More detailed claims about church construction, relocation, or boundary changes should be left open until stronger primary documentation is available.
