Namyangsan Catholic Church

Namyangsan Parish began in January 2011 as one of six new parishes established by the Diocese of Busan. At the time, the diocese was creating new parishes in densely populated urban areas in order to reduce pastoral isolation among Catholics and foster smaller communities. The Catholic Times reported that Namyangsan secured a site in the residential-development area of Gachon-ri, Mulgeum-eup, and was created to serve Jungbu-dong, Nambu-dong, and parts of Beomeo-ri and Gachon-ri.

The Catholic Church directory in Korea records January 12, 2011, as the establishment date. The creation of the parish was part of a diocesan policy to subdivide existing pastoral territories in response to changes in population and living patterns in the Yangsan area. Namyangsan’s beginning is therefore best understood not merely as the construction of a new church building but as the establishment of an independent Catholic pastoral base in a newly developing residential area.

The parish then continued the process of securing a church of its own. After several years of community formation and preparation, a dedication ceremony for the new church was celebrated on December 10, 2017, with Bishop Son Sam-seok presiding. According to diocesan records, the three-story building has a total floor area of 1,949.01 square meters and includes parish offices and parking, a hall, chapel and catechetical rooms, the main church, and the priest’s residence.

Between the establishment of the parish in 2011 and the dedication in 2017 lay several years in which the community took shape and prepared its own spaces for liturgy and formation within a new residential district. The movement from a parish founded under the diocese’s expansion policy to a community with its own dedicated church is a central part of Namyangsan’s history and explains how the present parish structure developed in Mulgeum.
