Namsan Mission Station

History & origins

The Catholic Church directory in Korea records July 7, 1968, as the establishment date of Namsan Mission Station. In the rural areas around Miryang, Catholics living far from a parish church often sustained their faith through mission-station communities, and Namsan took shape within this local Church structure. The currently available sources do not allow the detailed preparations immediately before its establishment or the form of its earliest building to be determined, but they do establish that the mission community existed from the late 1960s.

A 1991 Catholic Times article lists Namsan among the mission stations then under Miryang Parish. At the time, the mission communities of Miryang Parish took part in one another’s anniversary celebrations, and the article records that the leader of Namsan Mission Station joined an anniversary event at neighboring Samyang Mission Station. This shows that Namsan did not exist as an isolated small group but lived its faith within a network that connected Miryang Parish and its various mission communities.

When Yerim Parish was separated from Miryang Parish in 2004, the pastoral structure of southern Miryang also changed. Yerim Parish later took the name Nammiryang and established a new parish church, and a 2013 report on the dedication of that church explicitly lists Namsan as one of the three mission stations under the new parish. This confirms that Namsan’s parish affiliation was adjusted as the local parish structure changed.

The history of Namsan Mission Station can therefore be summarized through its establishment in 1968, its activity as a mission community under Miryang Parish, and its later connection with the Nammiryang parish structure. Detailed chronological records are limited, but the available evidence shows that for more than half a century local Catholics have maintained this place of faith while remaining connected with the parish system of the Miryang area.
