Namsan Catholic Church

History & origins

Namsan Parish was established in July 1988 after being separated from Geumjeong Parish. The Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism records the parish name, patron, and early Catholic population, making it possible to trace changes after the community was formed. With the creation of a separate parish, Catholics in the Namsan-dong area began to develop liturgical life, catechesis, and parish organizations within an independent pastoral unit.

The early Catholic population grew relatively quickly. The Encyclopedia records 1,600 Catholics in 1989, 2,752 in 1991, and 5,299 in 1993. This sharp increase over only a few years is direct evidence that the Catholic community in the Namsan-dong area expanded rapidly after the parish was established. The figures themselves, however, do not establish a specific social cause for that increase, so it is appropriate not to infer more than the records support.

After the community had grown, its outlook also extended to overseas mission. Diocesan records describe the Namsan Parish Overseas Mission Support Association as providing continuing assistance for missionary work and inviting children from Mongolia for exchanges. This provides an example of the parish’s history expanding beyond internal organizational growth toward participation in the mission and solidarity of the wider Catholic Church.

In 2018 the parish marked its thirtieth anniversary with a Mass of thanksgiving, the blessing of an icon of its patron, a photographic exhibition of former pastoral-council presidents, an exhibition of parishioners’ works, catechetical programs, and a pilgrimage. These events offered the community an opportunity to gather and revisit the faith and memories of earlier generations. The main documented trajectory of Namsan Parish therefore runs from its 1988 separation from Geumjeong Parish, through rapid early growth and support for overseas mission, to the communal remembrance of its thirtieth anniversary.
