Namcheon Cathedral

History & origins

Namcheon Parish was established on June 8, 1979. As the Diocese of Busan grew and required a church capable of accommodating large diocesan liturgies, it pursued the development of Namcheon Church as a central diocesan building. A church construction committee was organized on April 8, 1986, beginning the major building project.

According to contemporary reporting by the Catholic Times of Korea, the new church was completed after approximately five years and four months of work following the formation of the committee. The principal sanctuary was planned to hold about 3,000 people, while a smaller chapel, auditorium, catechetical rooms, meeting rooms, and other spaces were provided for both diocesan events and parish activities. The cost was met through diocesan support, contributions from the faithful, bazaars, and special offerings.

On May 31, 1992, Bishop Lee Kap-su of Busan officially proclaimed Namcheon Church the new cathedral during its dedication. Namcheon thereby became both a parish church and a central diocesan church containing the bishop’s cathedra. The change also transferred to Namcheon a representative cathedral role that Central Cathedral had exercised for many years.

Since then, the Diocese of Busan has continued to celebrate major diocesan liturgies at Namcheon. The present dual identity of Namcheon as both a territorial parish and a cathedral was therefore formed through this historical process: the founding of the parish, the construction of a larger church as the diocese expanded, and the conferral of the cathedral function upon it. The proclamation of cathedral status was more than a change of title for the building. It placed the bishop’s official seat and major diocesan liturgies at Namcheon, making the event a turning point that connected the history of the local parish directly with the liturgical structure of the entire Diocese of Busan. Later diocesan liturgical records show that this function has continued.
