About this place
Myeongji Catholic Church is a parish of the Hadan District in the Diocese of Busan, located in the Myeongji Ocean City area of Gangseo-gu, Busan. The directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea confirms its current location and diocesan affiliation and lists St. Michael the Archangel as its patron. In a rapidly expanding residential and new-town area of Gangseo-gu, the parish serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life.
Diocesan records show home visits and messages aimed at inviting inactive Catholics back into parish life, parish-day gatherings, and activities of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul involving young people. In particular, records of youth preparing to tutor multicultural students, share meals, and accompany elderly people show a parish seeking to connect faith with love of neighbor through the apostolate of the laity.
History & origins
Myeongji Parish was established on January 12, 2010, with St. Michael the Archangel as its patron. It began at a time when large-scale residential development and demographic change in the Myeongji area of Gangseo-gu, Busan, created the need for an independent parish community, and it subsequently built a local Catholic community centered on Myeongji Ocean City.
In 2015 the parish carried out a focused effort to invite inactive Catholics back into the community. According to diocesan records, local leaders began sending messages and making home visits in June, and in October the parish held an “Evening to Invite Inactive Catholics.” This was not merely a single event but part of a sustained effort to restore relationships with Catholics living in the neighborhood.
A parish-day celebration was recorded in 2017, showing the community strengthening its internal bonds. The establishment of parish-wide events within a relatively short time after foundation, together with continuing efforts to reconnect with inactive Catholics, illustrates how Myeongji Parish developed a new Catholic community amid the rapid transformation of the Myeongji area.
