Munhyeon Catholic Church

History & origins

Munhyeon Parish was established on January 29, 1975, when it was separated from Beomil Parish under an expansion plan of the Diocese of Busan. A contemporary report in the Catholic Times recorded that about 700 households, comprising 1,859 Catholics, were divided from Beomil to form the new parish. The change belonged to a broader diocesan effort to subdivide large existing parishes and create pastoral centers closer to rapidly expanding urban neighborhoods in Busan.

After the parish was established, the faithful began fundraising and preparations for a new church complex. On July 6, 1975, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in the presence of Bishop Lee Gap-su. The project envisioned not only the church itself but also a rectory, convent, and kindergarten. The fundraising and participation described in the contemporary report show that the new parish was becoming more than an administrative division: it was building the physical and communal foundations needed for an active local Catholic community.

The beginnings of Munhyeon Parish can therefore be understood as a closely linked process of forming a new pastoral community separated from Beomil and constructing a church to sustain it. The present parish grew from those foundations, and its establishment remains one example of how the Diocese of Busan expanded its parish network in response to urban demographic change during the 1970s.
