Jurye Catholic Church

History & origins

Jurye Parish was established on February 1, 1986. This gave the Jurye area an independent parish community in which Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities could be sustained locally. The same foundation date is recorded in the current Korean Catholic directory, providing a clear point of departure for the parish’s history.

Public diocesan sources do not provide enough detail to reconstruct the entire early chronology of church construction or changes in jurisdiction before the parish was established. It is therefore more reliable not to add unverified details but to focus on the documented foundation and continuity of the community. Since its establishment, Jurye has taken root as a parish of the Gaya District and has continued the liturgical and catechetical life of Catholics in the area.

In 2016, the Diocese of Busan recorded a “30th anniversary celebration of the founding of Jurye Parish” in its diocesan news. This provides a verifiable milestone showing that the community founded in the mid-1980s had continued beyond a generation and had reached a point of commemorating its own history. The fact that the diocese preserved the anniversary as a distinct parish news item also confirms Jurye’s continuity as an established local community.

The history of Jurye Catholic Church is therefore clearer in the steady continuity of its parish community than in a detailed building chronology. Its progress from foundation to the thirtieth anniversary and its continuing pastoral life within the Gaya District represent the settlement of a local Catholic community in the urban life of western Busan and the passing of that faith from one generation to the next.
