Jeonha Catholic Church

History & origins

Jeonha Parish was established on January 17, 1978. Official records of the Diocese of Busan confirm that the parish celebrated the fortieth anniversary of its foundation in 2018, corroborating its decades-long continuity as a Catholic community in Ulsan’s Dong-gu. Through the establishment of the parish, Catholics in the Jeonha area gained an independent pastoral base in which Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life could continue locally.

The parish’s growth was also connected with the formation of a new Catholic community in nearby Bangeojin. According to contemporary reporting by the Catholic Times of Korea, Jeonha Parish secured land for a church in the Bangeojin area in 1984 and began construction of the new church in September 1990. While maintaining Mass and parish life, the community prepared additional space for the growing Catholic population of Dong-gu.

Bangeojin Catholic Church was consequently dedicated on December 15, 1992, and contemporary reports stated that it was to be separated from Jeonha Parish afterward. This shows that the history of Jeonha Parish was not limited to sustaining a single community but also helped provide the groundwork for another parish community to take root in Ulsan’s Dong-gu. In 2018, the parish marked its fortieth anniversary with the Rosary, a special lecture, a walking pilgrimage, and a Mass of thanksgiving, recalling its history as a community.

The fortieth-anniversary record is more than a calculation of years. By looking back on its beginnings and local mission through the Rosary, a special lecture, and a walking pilgrimage, the parish treated its past as part of its faith. Jeonha’s history can therefore be traced as a sequence of foundation, community growth, the formation of neighboring parish life, and the remembrance and transmission of that experience.
