History & origins

The Paul Chong Ha-sang Spirituality Center developed as a place for retreats and lay spiritual formation in the Diocese of Busan. Available Church sources do not allow the exact opening date or the complete early construction history to be established with confidence, but one account states that more than seventy percent of the construction cost was provided through the “palanca” of Cursillistas—that is, prayer, sacrifice, and offerings. This indicates that the center took shape in close connection with a diocesan movement of lay spiritual renewal.

Catholic spiritual-program records from the mid-2000s show that the center offered a range of programs, including day retreats, one-night retreats, and three-night retreats. Later diocesan records continue to mention the center as a venue for free Lenten retreats and Cursillo formation. Records that Cursillo courses were held there many times each year show that it functioned not as an occasional event venue but as a continuing base for spiritual renewal and lay formation.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought an interruption to the Cursillo program. Contemporary records note that training could not continue after the 426th women’s Cursillo. The center’s history can therefore be understood as a process in which a place supported by the voluntary prayer and offerings of diocesan Catholics became a setting for many kinds of retreat and formation, and, even as programs paused or were adjusted in response to social circumstances, retained its character as a center of spiritual formation for the Diocese of Busan.

Although the available public sources do not establish the center’s exact opening date, records from different periods clearly show that retreats and Cursillo formation repeatedly took place in the same center. Its historical significance therefore lies less in a single founding ceremony than in the continuity of a place supported by lay spiritual renewal and used over a long period for formation and retreat.
