History & origins

Jangyu Daecheong Parish was created as growth in the Jangyu area made it necessary to separate a new parish from the existing Jangyu Parish. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory records its establishment date as January 10, 2006. A diocesan notice concerning newly established parishes described it at the time as “Jangyu Daecheong Catholic Church (provisional name, separated from Jangyu Parish)” and stated that the new community began with responsibility for Daecheong-ri, Gwandong-ri, and part of Sammun-ri. Its initial size was given as 397 households and 1,112 Catholics.

The separation reflects how growth in population and in the Catholic community of the Jangyu area created a need for more localized pastoral care than one existing parish could provide. A diocesan clergy assignment notice also classified Jangyu Daecheong as a “newly established” parish, with its independent pastoral ministry beginning on the same date. The document used the branch of the Namhae Expressway as a boundary reference, showing that this was not simply a change of name but the creation of a separate pastoral unit through the division of territory and parish records.

The new community was initially announced under the provisional name Jangyu Daecheong Catholic Church, but it later appears in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference directory under the settled parish name “Jangyu Daecheong,” with Our Lady of Sorrows as patron. As Catholics and territory separated from Jangyu Parish settled into their own liturgical and pastoral community, the Church structure of the wider Jangyu area changed from one parish serving the area to several parishes organized around more localized living zones.

The Diocese of Busan recorded that in September 2015 Jangyu Daecheong Parish held events marking its tenth anniversary. The community celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving and a sports gathering, while anniversary projects included a family camp, a concert, lectures, and a sharing exhibition. This communal review of its first decade serves as a milestone showing how a parish that began through separation developed its own community culture in the local area. The history of Jangyu Daecheong can thus be understood as part of the subdivision of parish structures and the settlement of new Catholic communities alongside the urban growth of the wider Jangyu area.
