Jangrim Catholic Church

History & origins

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory records Jangnim Parish as having been established on February 18, 1998. With the creation of an independent parish community in the Jangnim area of Saha-gu, Catholics gained a local foundation for continuing Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life within their own living area. The establishment of the parish was distinct from the later completion of a church building; historically, it marked the formal creation within the diocese of an independent pastoral community responsible for the Jangnim area.

After its establishment, the community proceeded with construction of a new church, which was dedicated on November 10, 2001, in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Jeong Myeong-jo of Busan. The Catholic Times reported that about 700 parishioners and local residents attended. The new complex was built on a 732-pyeong site with a total floor area of 663 pyeong. The first floor contained a hall, offices, catechetical rooms, and kitchen facilities; the second included the church, priests’ residence, and convent; and the third included choir and classroom space. Liturgical, educational, administrative, and community functions were thus gathered in a single parish complex.

The fact that a permanent church and supporting facilities were completed roughly three years after the parish was established shows how quickly the Jangnim community organized the practical foundations of an independent parish. The contemporary report’s mention of local residents attending the dedication also suggests that completion of the church was more than an internal parish event; it marked the visible establishment of a new Catholic community within the everyday life of Jangnim.

The early history of Jangnim Parish can therefore be clearly organized into two stages: the establishment of the parish in 1998 and the dedication of the new church in 2001. First an independent community was formally created within the diocese, and then that community completed the physical setting needed for sustained liturgy, education, and pastoral work. The sequence shows how canonical parish establishment and church construction are distinct events that nevertheless work together as a local Church takes root as a stable community.
