About this place

Inbo Catholic Church is a parish of the Yaeum District in the Diocese of Busan, located in Duseo-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan. The official Catholic Directory in Korea lists it as a parish and names St. Joseph as its patron. Within a relatively broad rural living area of Ulju-gun, it serves as the nearby Catholic center where local believers participate in Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and community life.

Duseo-myeon, where Inbo is located, is a rural living area in which villages and residential settlements are widely dispersed. In this environment, the church provides a concrete center where local Catholics can gather regularly and remain connected with diocesan pastoral life, and its importance lies in being a permanent parish where a living Catholic community continues today. In an area of lower population density and wide travel distances, the parish functions as a central point that connects Catholics and enables liturgical and communal life to continue. With St. Joseph as its patron, the parish is significant as a permanent pastoral center that enables Catholics in a rural area to remain continuously connected with the Church community. Visitors can understand Inbo more accurately by seeing it not merely as a place associated with historical memory, but as a living parish in which Mass, the sacraments, formation, and fellowship continue in the present.

History & origins

The Duseo, Eonyang, and Sangbuk area in which Inbo Parish is located is connected with the early development of Catholic life in the Ulsan and Busan region. The Catholic Times describes the area as one of the older centers of Catholic faith and notes that Songdae Mission Station was raised to Eonyang Parish in May 1927. The Inbo community grew as one of the local Catholic communities formed within this longer history of mission stations and parish ministry centered on Eonyang.

Inbo Mission Station was raised to the status of an independent parish on January 11, 2007. This date is consistent in both the official Catholic Directory in Korea and the Catholic Times. The transition from mission station to parish gave Catholics in and around Duseo-myeon a more stable pastoral structure in which to continue Mass, the sacraments, and parish community life.

After the parish was established, a new church suited to the independent community was prepared. On May 5, 2013, the new church was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General Joseph Son Sam-seok, and the complex provided the worship space, rectory, and other facilities needed for parish life. The history of Inbo can therefore be understood as the growth of a mission-station community within the older Catholic tradition of the Eonyang region into an independent parish with its own permanent church and pastoral foundation. The 2013 dedication report also records that the new church was a two-story complex providing both the parish building and a rectory. Inside, a set of fourteen Stations of the Cross and a crucifix by artist Hwang Hye-seon were installed, showing that the new building was designed not only as a functional pastoral facility but also as a liturgical environment for prayer and meditation. The dedication of a permanent church only several years after the mission station became a parish clearly shows how the independent community added a stable physical foundation to its newly established pastoral structure.
