Hogye Catholic Church

History & origins

The Catholic community in Hogye began as a mission station in 1966. It was not yet an independent parish but a local place of Catholic life under the pastoral care of a neighboring parish, allowing Catholics in northern Ulsan to gather and maintain their faith. In 1988 its jurisdiction was transferred from Ulsan Parish to Byeongyeong Parish, a change that preceded the later development toward parish status.

In February 1995, as the community prepared for elevation to a parish, a church-building committee was organized and ground was broken for a new church. Beyond diocesan assistance and proceeds from the sale of mission-station property, parishioners took part in income-generating projects, including mushroom cultivation, to help meet construction costs. The process shows that the new parish church was built not only through an administrative decision but also through sustained participation and shared responsibility among local Catholics. The total construction cost was about 1.96 billion won. Records that parishioners themselves undertook income-generating projects to cover the portion not met by diocesan assistance and the sale of mission-station property show how strongly the establishment of the parish depended on practical participation by the community.

Hogye mission station was elevated to a parish on February 3, 1996. On May 5 of the same year, Bishop Lee Gap-su of Busan presided at the dedication of the new church. The building, with one basement level and three floors above ground, provided a sanctuary, catechetical rooms, halls, and other spaces for parish life. Through this sequence—from mission station, to a change of pastoral jurisdiction, to independent parish and dedicated church—the present Hogye Parish took shape. At the time of dedication, the new church stood on a site of about 1,400 pyeong with roughly 680 pyeong of building area. Its oval form was inspired by the crown of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and it included a main hall, catechetical rooms, the sanctuary, choir space, and other facilities for worship and formation.
