History & origins

The Catholic community of Haseonpil is connected with the formation of Catholic villages in the mid-nineteenth century, when Father Thomas Choe Yang-eop traveled through Gyeongsang Province as a missionary. A cultural-heritage survey published by the Ministry of Culture records Haseonpil as a Catholic village formed during Father Choe's missionary period in Gyeongsang. Historical materials from Eonyang Parish likewise connect the community's roots with this era. Haseonpil thus took shape within the wider pattern of Catholic villages in the Eonyang area, where believers who had moved into mountain and rural settlements amid persecution supported one another and preserved their faith.

By the late nineteenth century, Catholic homes were serving as mission-station spaces where visiting clergy could meet the faithful and the community could gather. Eonyang Parish's historical record states that when Bishop Gustave Mutel and his party visited the area, a Catholic household in Haseonpil was being used as the mission station. The community continued as a center for local liturgical life, catechesis, and contact among Catholics, and records from the period of Japanese rule also attest to the presence of the Haseonpil mission station and its lay leadership.

An old wooden mission-station building remains at Haseonpil. A public cultural-heritage survey records the building as a preserved part of Korea's Catholic heritage and treats Haseonpil not simply as an old place name or a vanished community but as a Catholic village with a surviving physical trace. Public sources, however, give differing dates for the construction of the present building, so no precise construction year has been included where a reliable consensus could not be established.

As the diocesan pastoral structure changed and neighboring parishes were established, Haseonpil continued to preserve its Catholic heritage in the form of a mission station. It is now registered under the jurisdiction of Inbo Parish. Its history extends from the formation of a Catholic village in the era of Father Choe Yang-eop through mission-station life centered on Catholic households to the preservation of the wooden chapel, illustrating how lay communities transmitted the faith in the Ulsan and Eonyang region.
