Gubong Church

History & origins

Gubong Parish was established as a new parish while Busan's older urban neighborhoods expanded along the hillside roads and the Catholic population grew. Both the Catholic directory and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia record October 29, 1967 as the establishment date. Its early pastoral territory was centered on urban neighborhoods around Gubongsan, including parts of Sujeong-dong and Choryang-dong.

The parish continued its community life around liturgy and formation through changes in population and the urban landscape. Over many years it accompanied local Catholics through Baptism, marriage, funerals, and other sacraments, allowing personal faith stories and the memory of the neighborhood community to accumulate together. Although pastoral boundaries changed as the city and nearby parishes developed, Gubong remained a focal point for the local Catholic community.

In 2017, for the fiftieth anniversary of the parish, a program was prepared that included lectures by former pastors and priests from the parish, a Mass of thanksgiving, a historical photo exhibition, and a poetry-and-art display. These events preserved the record of the previous half-century while inviting parishioners to learn their history of faith anew. Gubong's history thus continues as the story of a parish that has remained with its neighborhood through the transformation of Busan's old city center.
