Gilchon Mission Station

History & origins

The direct beginning of Gilcheon Mission Station dates to August 25, 1958. Eonyang Parish's historical record states that, during the tenure of Father John Kim Yeong-je, Gilcheon was separated from Sunjeong Mission Station and established as a new mission station. A rapid increase in local Catholics, influenced in part by relief supplies, was among the reasons for the separation, and by 1959 the community had grown to about 200 members.

As industrialization and rural-to-urban migration continued, however, increasing numbers of Catholics left the countryside, and both Gilcheon and Sunjeong weakened. Eonyang Parish records that in 1980 Gilcheon was again operated together with Sunjeong. Although a separate mission-station building remained, improved transportation and the short distance to the parish church gradually reduced the independent function that the mission station had once exercised.

The building subsequently supported the faith community in other ways, including meetings of devotional groups and retreats. Eonyang Parish's guide states that the site had about 700 pyeong of land and a building of roughly 30 pyeong, and that after renovation in 2001 it was used for mountain-school programs and retreats. The history of Gilcheon thus shows the transformation of a once sizeable rural mission station: it grew, declined as migration reshaped the countryside, and then found new communal uses for the faith space that remained.
