Geumjeong Cathedral

History & origins

Geumjeong Parish was established on October 1, 1974. This date, preserved in the Catholic Directory in Korea, is the parish's official starting point that can be clearly verified today. In the years that followed, the Catholic community of the Geumjeong area continued its parish life and gradually strengthened its communal foundation through generations and neighborhood groups.

In 2014, for the fortieth anniversary of the parish, a program of monthly family pilgrimages by neighborhood group was organized as part of the commemorative activities. Diocesan news records the first pilgrimage on March 30 of that year, when about 120 family members from the Jangjeon-dong area visited Galmaemot Shrine. Rather than marking forty years only with a celebration, the parish connected the anniversary with a family and neighborhood pilgrimage to the faith of the Korean martyrs, revealing something of the spiritual direction valued by the community at the time.

On August 6, 2017, a blessing ceremony was held for the parish education building. This marked a further step in expanding space for faith formation and parish gatherings. The documented sequence from the parish's establishment in 1974 to the fortieth-anniversary family pilgrimage and the blessing of the education building shows a community that, over time, enlarged both its shared experiences of faith and the spaces that supported formation.
