About this place

Geumgok Catholic Church is the church of a parish community in the Yangsan District of the Diocese of Busan, with St. Francis of Assisi as its patron saint. It serves as a local center of faith where Catholics in the Geumgok area of Buk-gu, Busan, gather for Mass, the sacraments, prayer, and faith formation. Within the diocese's official parish structure, the community continues its common life and evangelical sharing. Under the patronage of St. Francis of Assisi, the parish has a clear orientation toward joining prayer and liturgy with practical concern for others as one way of Christian life.

A 2026 Diocese of Busan bulletin describes the Geumgok community as providing weekly catechetical formation for parents and encouraging parents and students to serve together as lectors. The purpose is to connect family life with parish life so that the faith of parents may be handed on to their children and different generations may experience Mass and service together. In this sense, Geumgok Catholic Church is more than a place where liturgy is celebrated; it is a local parish home where the transmission of faith between generations and communal sharing are learned in everyday life.

History & origins

Geumgok Parish was established on February 18, 1998. This is the official institutional starting point recorded in the Catholic Directory in Korea. With the establishment of an independent parish for the Catholic community in the Geumgok area of Buk-gu, Busan, a stable basis was formed for continuing liturgical and communal life in the neighborhood.

One later aspect that can be documented in official records is the parish's sharing with the local community. In January 2020, ahead of the Lunar New Year, the parish carried out a charitable sharing project that delivered gifts to 180 households in the area. It is a concrete scene showing how the parish community, over the years after its establishment, developed relationships beyond its internal life of faith and reached out to its neighbors.

The currently available official sources do not provide a continuous chronology of the construction, expansion, or relocation of the church building. Even so, the parish's establishment in 1998 and later diocesan records of community activity make it possible to trace a clear line in which Geumgok Parish built a local foundation for Catholic life while continuing acts of sharing with its neighbors.
