Geoje-dong Catholic Church

History & origins

Geoje-dong Parish was established at a time when the expansion of Busan's urban area created a need for new pastoral units. The Catholic directory records November 19, 1973 as the parish's establishment date. From then on it developed as an independent parish for Geoje-dong, sustaining liturgy, the sacraments, formation, and community life within the growing city.

Over the years, the community has treated major anniversaries not simply as celebrations but as opportunities to reflect on its history of faith. In 2023, for the fiftieth anniversary, a Mass of thanksgiving was celebrated by Bishop Son Sam-seok. Parishioners offered a large spiritual bouquet of the Rosary, and Confirmation was also celebrated, linking the remembrance of the parish's past with the sacramental life of the present community.

Around the fiftieth anniversary, historical photo displays, a Eucharistic spirituality seminar, continuing formation, and community events helped pass the memory of the previous half-century to new generations. The history of Geoje-dong Parish can thus be read as the story of an urban parish that has sustained local Catholic life over many decades and used moments of remembrance as occasions for renewed spiritual growth.
