Eomgung Church

History & origins

Eomgung Parish was established as a new parish of the Diocese of Busan on September 23, 2002. Contemporary reports state that the Eomgung area had previously belonged to Jurye Parish, and the diocese created an independent community by assigning all of Eomgung-dong and part of Hakjang-dong to the new parish. The Catholic Church directory in Korea records the same date as the establishment of the parish.

Notably, preparations for the church building began before the formal establishment of the parish. Construction started on December 2, 2001 and continued after the parish was officially erected. After roughly one year and ten months of construction, the complex included the church proper as well as a hall, catechetical rooms, a rectory, a convent, and other spaces needed for parish life.

On October 24, 2004, the new church was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Cheong Myong-jo, then Bishop of Busan, giving the new parish a completed physical base of its own. The close sequence of parish establishment and church construction reflects the effort to respond to new pastoral needs in the area by developing both a community and the facilities needed to sustain it. Eomgung Parish subsequently became established as the Catholic community responsible for liturgy, the sacraments, and faith formation in the Eomgung area.

At the time of dedication, the new complex was not simply a worship space. It was designed to accommodate education and meetings as well as the living spaces of priests and sisters. This shows that, at a time when the parish itself was newly established, the community sought to create at once a stable base for liturgy, catechesis, community organization, and pastoral life.
