Duwangseong Peter Catholic Church

History & origins

Duwang St. Peter Parish was established on January 12, 2011. Contemporary Catholic media described it as a parish newly created by the Diocese of Busan as an “evangelization base parish” for the Ulsan area. The new community secured land in the Seonam 1 land-readjustment district of Nam-gu, Ulsan and quickly began building an independent church.

The project came to fruition the following year. On October 27, 2012, the new church was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Hwang Cheol-su. According to the Diocese of Busan bulletin, the new building rose four stories and had a total area of about 1,889 square meters, including the church and educational spaces. At the dedication, the diocese emphasized that the completion of the building should be accompanied by the continuing growth of the believing community itself.

After establishing the parish and completing its church within a short period, the community gradually took root around this new pastoral space. In 2021, a Mass and events marked the tenth anniversary of the parish's establishment and looked back on its first decade. The early history of Duwang St. Peter can therefore be summarized as the building of a new pastoral base in a developing urban area and the parallel formation of a church building and a parish community.
