About this place

Deoksin Parish is a parish of the Yaeum District in the Diocese of Busan, located in Onsan-eup, Ulju-gun, Ulsan. The official Catholic directory in Korea registers it as a parish of the Diocese of Busan, with the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its patron. In the Onsan living area, where industrial and residential districts coexist, the parish serves as a local pastoral center where Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments and build a community of faith.

With the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its patron, the spiritual meaning of Deoksin can be understood in connection with a community seeking to live Christ's love in its local setting. Diocesan records also preserve examples of parishioners taking part in street evangelization, showing that its role extends beyond liturgical life inside the church to the work of sharing the faith with its neighbors.

History & origins

The beginnings of Deoksin Parish were prepared before its formal establishment. In June 1989, The Catholic Times reported that Father Yoo Chang-ho, then pastor of Wolpyeong Parish in Ulsan, and his parishioners were pressing ahead with construction of a new church for “Deoksin Church, which will be separated in the future.” This contemporary record shows that preparations for a separate parish were already under way in response to pastoral needs in the Onsan area.

Following this preparation, Deoksin Parish was established on February 1, 1990. The creation of the parish gave Catholics in Deoksin and Onsan an independent parish community around which they could sustain liturgy, sacramental life, catechesis, and communal activities.

The parish's missionary orientation can also be seen in later diocesan records. In 2015, the Diocese of Busan reported on street evangelization carried out by members of Deoksin Parish. The central historical thread is therefore clear: a community that began with preparations for a church before parish establishment became an independent parish and continued to direct its faith outward through local evangelization.
