Deokgye Catholic Church

History & origins

The formation of Deokgye Parish was closely connected with urban growth in the Ungsang area of Yangsan. Reporting on the blessing of Ungsang Church in 1998, The Catholic Times noted that large-scale residential development and an increase in the Catholic population were expected in the Deokgye and Seochang areas. Ungsang Parish therefore received land from the diocese and began construction of a new church. This record shows the circumstances that created a need for an independent pastoral base in Deokgye.

Building on that preparation, Deokgye Parish was formally established on August 31, 1999. Its canonical and administrative establishment provided a structure through which Catholics in the growing Ungsang living area could participate in parish life closer to home.

The parish continued to develop its church and community space after its establishment. In November 2017, the Diocese of Busan bulletin recorded a “Dedication of Deokgye Church.” Although official documentation describing the full course of the building work is limited, this dedication can be understood as a milestone in the parish's long process of securing its pastoral space and consolidating its communal home.
