History & origins

Dalmaji Parish was established on January 10, 2006, by dividing portions of the territories of Haeundae Parish and Holy Family Parish. The diocesan notice creating the new parish set out the areas under Dalmaji and the number of Catholics transferred, showing that parts of the two existing parishes were reorganized as a separate pastoral unit. The history of the Dalmaji community therefore begins with the creation of an independent parish for Catholics in the eastern part of the Haeundae living area.

In its early years, the parish adapted an existing building for use as a church. As the community became established, plans were developed for a new church that could more securely accommodate the parish’s liturgical, educational, and communal activities. According to diocesan records, a groundbreaking ceremony for the new church was held on November 28, 2020, and the plan called not only for a new building but also for the former church to be reused as a multipurpose hall, catechetical rooms, and a lounge.

After construction was completed, the new church was dedicated in 2024. By providing a separate new church while also reusing the existing building for formation and community activities, the project marked a transition from the parish’s earlier adapted liturgical space toward a more complete set of pastoral facilities. The combination of new construction and reuse of the older building is a distinctive feature of this stage of the parish’s development.

The sequence from the parish’s separation in 2006, through the groundbreaking for the new church in 2020, to its dedication in 2024 shows how Dalmaji gradually expanded its own spaces after beginning as an independent community.
