Dadae Church

History & origins

Dadae Parish was established as a parish of the Diocese of Busan on February 1, 1997. The Catholic Church directory in Korea records this date as the foundation of the parish, and a diocesan report describing the parish day in 2021 as its “24th anniversary” is consistent with a 1997 establishment. From this period, the Catholic community in Dadae began to organize its own liturgy, formation, and parish-group life within an independent pastoral structure.

After its establishment, the parish worked to secure a church of its own, and the new church was dedicated on October 23, 2001, with Bishop Jeong Myeong-jo presiding. The Catholic Times reported that the building included a hall and catechetical rooms on the first floor, the church on the second, and a choir area on the third. Within only a few years of becoming a parish, the community had therefore created its own space capable of accommodating liturgy, formation, and parish gatherings.

The new church was also distinctive for reflecting the local character of Dadaepo in its architecture. The report explained that the overall form was modeled after a ship and expressed the Christian image of the “ship of salvation.” Architectural elements also incorporated the “Canticle of the Sun,” reflecting the spirituality of the parish patron, Saint Francis, and thus connected the maritime image of the area with the Catholic identity of the parish.

The establishment of the parish in 1997 and the dedication of the new church in 2001 are two major landmarks in the early history of the Dadae community. The parish later continued to remember its foundation anniversary as a community. The available records show a progression through the formation of an independent parish, the establishment of its own church, and an architectural expression shaped by both the parish patron and the local setting.
