Chojang Church

History & origins

Chojang Parish was established while the Diocese of Busan was expanding its local pastoral network during the early period of its development as an independent diocese. The directory of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea records October 11, 1959, as the date of establishment. At the time, the Diocese of Busan was creating new parishes in several areas in response to the sharp postwar growth of the city's population and Catholic communities, and the establishment of Chojang formed part of that pastoral expansion.

The Seo-gu area in which the parish was established had previously been served by older urban parishes responsible for broad territories and large Catholic populations. Creating an independent parish at Chojang provided a stable local base where Catholics could attend Mass and the sacraments nearby and continue catechesis and organized community life. Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Korea's first Catholic priest and a martyr, was chosen as the parish patron.

The Olivetan Benedictine Sisters later came to assist the parish apostolate. The publicly available official sources do not provide a sufficiently detailed chronology of construction or later alterations to the church building, so unverified building dates and events have not been added. Within what can be documented, the history of Chojang Parish can be described as that of a local Catholic community established during the early expansion of the Diocese of Busan and sustained through its patronal identity and collaboration with a religious community.
