Cheongok Catholic Church

History & origins

Cheongok Parish was established on January 12, 2011, as an “evangelization base parish” of the Diocese of Busan intended to expand Catholic community life in new residential areas of Ulsan’s Buk-gu. The diocese created the new parish so that the growing number of Catholics in the living area encompassing Cheongok-dong, Sangan-dong, and Dalcheon-dong could sustain Mass and pastoral life as an independent community.

After the parish was founded, the community worked to provide a church of its own. The new building was constructed at the present site on Gajae-gil in Ulsan’s Buk-gu as a four-story structure of approximately 1,938 square meters. It included a worship space for about 350 people and rooms for parish activities, making it a building suited to the liturgy, formation, and meetings of a local community rather than a very large church.

On March 30, 2014, the new Cheongok Catholic Church was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Auxiliary Bishop Son Sam-seok, then vicar general of the Diocese of Busan. About three years after the parish’s establishment, the community thus gained a stable liturgical home, completing the physical foundation for a parish originally created as a center of evangelization.

The history of Cheongok Catholic Church is a relatively recent example of urban expansion and diocesan parish planning developing together. The sequence—first establishing a parish in a new residential area, then completing and dedicating a church as the community grew—shows how the Diocese of Busan extended its pastoral network in response to changes in northern Ulsan. This case also shows that the creation of a parish and the construction of its church did not occur all at once. The diocese first established the pastoral unit and the Catholic community began its life; the church building was completed over the following years. This sequence provides a relatively clear record of how a Church community took root in a newly developing urban area.
