Byeongyeong Catholic Church

History & origins

The establishment of Byeongyeong Parish was connected with apartment development and population growth in northern Ulsan during the 1980s. Anticipating future growth in the Hwabong and Hogye areas, the parent parish secured land for a future church in September 1983. A committee for establishing the new parish was organized in May 1987; additional land was obtained, and church construction began that August.

After these preparations, Byeongyeong Parish was formally established on February 5, 1988. Construction continued, and on November 13, 1989, the church, rectory, convent, and related facilities were completed. The sequence reflects a typical parish foundation during urban expansion: a new parish was separated in response to residential growth and then equipped with the facilities needed for stable communal life.

As the parish’s territory developed further, Hogye Mission Station was established in October 1989. That community was elevated to an independent parish on February 10, 1995. This shows that Byeongyeong itself became a mother parish for a newer Catholic community in northern Ulsan before that community in turn became independent.

The history of Byeongyeong also gives an important place to the local memory of martyrdom. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records a connection with Jangdaebeol, where James Heo In-baek, Luke Kim Jong-ryun, and Peter Yi Yang-deung were martyred during the 1866 persecution. In 1995 the parish held commemorative events for the martyrs, and relics of saints including Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon were enshrined in the church. Today, the “Ulsan Byeongyeong Martyrs’ Shrine” is registered as a separate location from the parish, so the historical memory associated with the parish should be distinguished from the present shrine site.
