Bukyangsan Catholic Church (북양산 성당) is a parish in the Yangsan District of the Catholic Diocese of Busan, serving Catholics in and around Sangbuk-myeon, Yangsan, through Mass, the sacraments, and parish community life. The official Catholic directory of Korea records Yangsan Parish as its mother parish and St. Joseph the Worker as its patron.
Its patronage under St. Joseph the Worker symbolically expresses a community seeking to live the faith within ordinary work and family life. Bukyangsan Parish was established as a separate community as the Catholic population and living areas of Yangsan expanded. Today it serves as a local center within the Yangsan District, allowing Catholics in the Sangbuk area to continue their liturgical and sacramental life closer to where they live.
History & origins
Bukyangsan Parish was established on January 4, 2013. The official Catholic directory of Korea records Yangsan Parish as its mother parish, and a Diocese of Busan bulletin from February of the same year listed Bukyangsan among the “newly established parishes” and instructed that mail be sent via Yangsan Parish. These records show the early stage in which the new parish was forming its own structure after separation from the Yangsan parish community.
The new parish took St. Joseph the Worker as its patron and became an independent community within the Yangsan District. Official sources presently available do not provide enough detail to reconstruct the entire process of building its church, but the Diocese of Busan’s official record of a Bukyangsan “Parish Day” in 2019 confirms the continued life and development of the parish community.
The history of Bukyangsan is therefore closely connected with the relatively recent formation of a separate parish for the northern Yangsan living area. Its establishment in 2013 can be understood as the diocese’s response to the need for a more local pastoral unit within territory formerly served from Yangsan Parish.
