Banyeo Church

History & origins

In the early 1970s, Banyeo-dong rapidly became a residential area as flood victims and residents displaced from hillside neighborhoods moved there amid urban redevelopment in Busan. As the population and number of Catholics increased, Dongnae Parish established Banyeo Mission Station on May 10, 1973, in the building of Handok Kindergarten in Banyeo 2-dong. Priests from Dongnae and Sasang parishes alternated in visiting to celebrate Mass. This mission station became the direct beginning of today’s Banyeo Parish.

The mission-station community wanted an independent parish and organized a building and promotion committee in May 1976. The Diocese of Busan, recognizing the area’s growth potential, acquired a church site in Jaesong-dong, and construction began on September 10 that year. The mission station was elevated to a parish on February 9, 1977, although the church was not yet complete, so Mass continued for a time in the mission-station hall. The new church was finished on June 29.

The Jaesong-dong church, however, suffered repeated damage from soil washing down during the rainy season amid land readjustment, while nearby apartment construction also transformed the neighborhood. The parish attempted to secure a new site in 1989 but encountered local opposition. With assistance from administrative authorities, land was exchanged and permission to use the present site was obtained in 1990. Construction began in 1991, and the new church was completed and dedicated on June 28, 1992.

After settling into the new church, the parish broadened its service to the surrounding community. During the 1990s it organized events for people with disabilities and expanded support for struggling households, older residents, and free meal services. Banyeo’s history thus runs from a mission station among urban migrants, through growth into a parish and relocation in response to environmental and urban change, to an expanded commitment to local care.
