Bangeojin Catholic Church

History & origins

From the 1970s onward, Dong-gu in Ulsan grew rapidly as Hyundai Heavy Industries and related industrial companies entered the area. Anticipating this change, Jeonha Parish acquired land in 1984 for a future church. In March 1991 it organized a committee to establish a new parish, initially referred to as Hwajeong, making the plan for division more concrete. Growth in both population and the Catholic community was creating a need for a separate parish.

Construction of the new church began on November 15, 1991, and the building was completed about a year later on December 15, 1992. A notable feature of the process was that the church facility was prepared before the parish itself was formally established. A large hall was also opened for use by local residents, giving the new Catholic facility an early point of contact with the surrounding community.

On February 6, 1993, the prepared community was formally separated from Jeonha Parish and established as Bangeojin Parish. During the planning stage the intended name had been “Hwajeong,” after the local area, but on January 16, 1992, following the advice of senior diocesan priests, the name was changed to “Bangeojin.” The change occurred before completion of the church and formal establishment, so the new parish began under its present name.

In the early period, shared pastoral responsibility by priests and the ministry of an assistant priest helped stabilize the community, while a religious-sisters’ house and several lay groups were also established. The history of Bangeojin Parish can therefore be understood as a response to the industrialization and population growth of eastern Ulsan: land was secured in advance, the church was built, and only then was the community separated as an independent parish.
