About this place

Banpo 1-dong St. Paul Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul in the 12th Seocho District of the western Seoul pastoral region, with St. Paul as its patron saint. It is listed as an independent parish in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory and serves the local faithful through liturgy, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.

As its name indicates, the parish places the missionary spirit of St. Paul at the center of its patronal devotion. Visitors should understand it as an ordinary parish church of the Archdiocese of Seoul rather than a monastery or a separate shrine.

History & origins

Banpo 1-dong Parish was established as a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul on August 21, 2008, the date recorded as its foundation in the official Catholic directory. After its establishment, the community continued the process of securing permanent pastoral space.

In December 2013, an architectural design competition was announced for a new church on the present Juheung 1-gil site. The competition planned a church building with five basement levels and six floors above ground, documenting the young parish’s effort to create long-term spaces for worship, education, and fellowship.

The publicly available primary sources reviewed here do not sufficiently establish the detailed circumstances before the parish’s foundation or the later completion and dedication dates of the new church, so those points are not included.
