History & origins

The exact year in which Seongam Mission Station was first established cannot be determined from the official and Catholic press sources reviewed for this task. A long-serving local Catholic interviewed by Catholic Times, however, recalled that when she came to the Seongam area in 1990, a small and deteriorating mission building already existed. The community can therefore be confirmed to have existed before that time, but this evidence is not extended into an unsupported claim for a specific foundation year.

The aging mission building was rebuilt in 1994. The local community secured a new building through support and the participation of its members, and Seo Chang-ui Anna later served as mission-station president from 1996 to 2004. The Catholic Times account recalls a period when several Legion of Mary groups were active even within this small community, showing that its religious life was sustained by strong lay participation.

In 2004 parishioners erected a commemorative stone honoring the former mission president's long service. Seongam has continued thereafter as a mission station of Daebu Parish, sustaining the liturgical life of Catholics in the local area. Its documented history is therefore centered less on major institutional construction than on the rebuilding of a deteriorated mission station and the long-term work of lay leaders and parishioners who kept a small community alive.
