Yongmun Mission Station

History & origins

According to the official Diocese of Andong page, Yongmun Mission Station was established on April 11, 1960. The Catholic Directory of Korea records the same date. The mission station was created so that Catholics in a rural area under Yecheon Parish could maintain communal faith without always traveling a long distance to the parish church, and it became a local Catholic center within Geumdangsil Village.

A Maeil Shinmun report on industrial heritage states that Fr. Roger No Gwang-myeong helped establish the mission-station building and describes how the Catholic community developed alongside a local economic community centered on sericulture. The mission station was therefore not only a liturgical space but also a place closely connected to the cooperative life and work of rural residents, a characteristic that led to attention within Gyeongsangbuk-do's industrial-heritage framework.

The Diocese of Andong's mission-station interviews remember a time when many students and families participated actively, followed by a sharp decline as rural depopulation and migration to cities reduced the local Catholic population. At the same time, newcomers returning to rural life have prevented the community from disappearing altogether. Yongmun's history brings together the expansion of rural Catholic mission in the 1960s, village production and cooperation, and the later demographic changes that transformed rural Korea.
