Yeonghae Catholic Church is a parish church of the Diocese of Andong and serves as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and communal Catholic life in the northern Yeongdeok area around Yeonghae-myeon. The Diocese of Andong lists Yeonghae as an established parish, but a Catholic mission community had existed in the area for many years before the parish was created. The present parish is therefore significant as the local center of a Church community that grew from the foundations laid by an earlier mission station.
The Catholic history of Yeonghae is also preserved in the former mission-station building. The “Former Yeonghae Catholic Mission Station in Yeongdeok” is designated as a National Registered Cultural Heritage site because it documents the spread and growth of Catholicism in the area. The former mission station and the present Yeonghae church are not the same building, but together they represent successive stages in the same local history, from a small mission community to an established parish. Yeonghae Catholic Church thus offers a way to understand both present parish life and the development of a Catholic community in a rural and coastal region.
The former mission station preserved as cultural heritage should not be mistaken for an auxiliary building of the present church; it is better understood as evidence of an earlier stage in the growth of the Catholic community in Yeonghae. Recognizing this distinction makes both the role of the present parish and the historical value of the old mission station clearer.
History & origins
The history of Yeonghae Parish begins with a longstanding mission community. According to the Korea Heritage Service, the building now registered as the “Former Yeonghae Catholic Mission Station in Yeongdeok” was constructed in 1948. After liberation it was used as a shared residence by local Catholics and from the 1950s served as a mission station, leaving an important material record of the spread and growth of Catholicism in the region. Although this building is separate from the present Yeonghae parish church, it is direct evidence of a Catholic community in the area before the parish was established.
The Diocese of Andong's chronology records that Sacred Heart Kindergarten was established at Yeonghae Mission Station, then under Yeongdeok Parish, in February 1974. This indicates that the mission community had developed beyond a small gathering for Sunday prayer into a Catholic center with educational and communal activity. As diocesan pastoral structures later changed, Yeonghae became a mission station of Hupo Parish and developed the foundations necessary for becoming an independent parish.
According to the Catholic Times and the Diocese of Andong, Yeonghae Parish was established on July 18, 1999, when the former mission station of Hupo Parish was raised to parish status. The new parish then served Yeonghae-myeon together with Chuksan-myeon, Changsu-myeon, and Byeonggok-myeon. Elevation from mission station to parish signified that the local Catholic population and pastoral needs had grown to the point where an independent sacramental and pastoral structure was required.
The former Yeonghae mission-station building was registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage property on November 4, 2019. The Korea Heritage Service evaluates it as a place that preserves the process through which Catholicism spread and grew in Yeonghae from the 1950s. Viewed together with the present parish, this heritage building reveals the longer trajectory of Catholic life in the area, from a small mission community to an independent parish.
