Yeongdeok Catholic Church

History & origins

The Catholic community in Yeongdeok began as a mission station. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that Yeongdeok Mission Station was established in November 1958 under Jukdo Parish in Pohang. At the time, there were relatively few parishes along the northern east coast, so existing parishes and mission stations had to serve broad areas. The growth of the Yeongdeok mission community created the basis for establishing an independent parish in the region.

Yeongdeok Mission Station was raised to parish status in April 1962. The Diocese of Andong's current status gives April 5 as the establishment date, while the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia gives April 1. Although the exact day differs, both sources agree that Yeongdeok Parish began in April 1962. After the first pastor, Fr. John Do Gwang-ju, arrived, land for the parish was secured. Construction of a church began in March 1964, and the new church was dedicated on December 10 of that year in a ceremony presided over by Archbishop John Seo Jeong-gil.

The parish expanded its pastoral foundation along with the construction of the church. The Diocese of Andong's pre-diocesan chronology records the establishment of Sacred Heart Kindergarten at Yeongdeok Parish in 1968. When the Diocese of Andong was erected in 1969, Yeongdeok Parish was transferred from the Archdiocese of Daegu to the new diocese and became part of its pastoral network along the east coast. It subsequently served surrounding mission communities, including Yeonghae and Sinae, and played a central role in the development of Catholic life in the Yeongdeok area.

Yeongdeok Parish continues today as one of the Diocese of Andong's east-coast parishes. Its development from a mission station to a parish, the construction of its church, and its transfer into the newly established diocese reflect the broader expansion of Catholic pastoral structures along the Gyeongsangbuk-do coast after the Korean War. Because the sources differ on the precise day of establishment, April 1962 is the most securely supported level of precision.
