Uljin Catholic Church

History & origins

The Catholic community in Uljin began in 1957 as Uljin Mission Station under Samcheok Parish of the Diocese of Chuncheon. On 24 May 1958 it was elevated to Uljin Parish, and the Diocese of Andong's historical record names Fr. Leo Clarke of the Missionary Society of St. Columban as the first pastor. Because Uljin was then a difficult-to-reach East Coast area, the establishment of a parish provided a closer base from which Catholics in Uljin-eup and surrounding communities could receive the sacraments and pastoral care.

The parish's diocesan affiliation changed as ecclesiastical boundaries were reorganized. Uljin County's history records that Uljin Catholic Church became part of the newly established Diocese of Wonju in 1965 and was transferred to the Diocese of Andong when that diocese was established in May 1969. After its foundation the parish established or cared for mission stations such as Jukbyeon, Giseong, Pyeonghae, Maehwa, Seomyeon, and Hupo, gradually organizing Catholic life across the large Uljin area. With later demographic and regional changes, some mission stations closed, while communities such as Hupo developed into separate parishes.

The 1980s brought a period of renewed facilities and pastoral infrastructure. Uljin County records the construction of a new parish church and rectory, the building of a convent, and the arrival of Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. Jukbyeon Mission Station likewise replaced its old building after 1987. These developments show that Uljin Parish was not merely a church for Catholics in the town center, but a parish that linked religious sisters and mission-station communities while strengthening the region's Catholic foundation. Today's Uljin Catholic Church stands on this history of growth from a mission station into a parish and of continuity through changing diocesan boundaries.
