Tapri Mission

History & origins

The Catholic Church directory in Korea records Tapri Gongso as having been established in March 1973. This was only a few years after the erection of the Diocese of Andong, when the new diocese was still organizing its parish and mission-station structure across northern Gyeongsangbuk-do. Around this time, the Catholic community in Tapri gained formal recognition as a mission station, giving Catholics in Geumseong-myeon a nearby base for liturgy and community life.

The public official sources reviewed do not provide the names of the people involved at the time of establishment or a detailed account of the first chapel building. Recent diocesan bulletins, however, show that Tapri Gongso continues within the pastoral life of Uiseong Parish and that work has continued to expand facilities for the local community. An October 2025 diocesan bulletin announced a “Tapri Gongso education-center construction project” and specified a fellowship and meeting room together with lodging space. A February 2026 bulletin reported that the project had been completed, allowing the recent development of the community facilities to be followed from construction to completion.

The verifiable chronology of Tapri Gongso therefore runs from its establishment in 1973, through decades of continued existence as a local Catholic mission community, to the recent expansion of spaces for formation and fellowship. More official records would be needed to describe the circumstances of its earliest years in detail, but the sources currently available clearly show the long continuity of Tapri Gongso as a local center of faith. The education center is best understood not as a facility that turns the gongso into an independent parish, but as an additional base for formation and fellowship for Catholics in the Tapri area within the pastoral structure of Uiseong Parish. The recent improvement of its facilities also shows that a mission community begun in the 1970s has continued into the present while renewing the practical foundations needed for community life.
