Ssangyong Mission

History & origins

Catholic life in the Gaeun area grew out of Catholic villages formed by believers who had moved into mountainous districts during the period of persecution and from mission stations organized as greater religious freedom became possible. A 2026 Catholic Peace Broadcasting report reviewing the history of mission stations under Gaeun Parish identifies the Meokbaengi Catholic village in Wangneung-ri as an important root of local Catholic life and records that Ssangyong Mission Station was established in Naeseo-ri, Nongam-myeon, in 1893. This places Ssangyong among the earlier organized mission stations of the Gaeun area.

In the late nineteenth century, a mission station was an important local unit where Catholics in places without a resident priest could pray together, learn the faith, and maintain a community until a priest visited to celebrate the sacraments. Ssangyong likewise became a center for Catholic life in Nongam-myeon within this system. Parish and mission-station jurisdictions in northern Gyeongsang Province were later reorganized several times, but the publicly available reliable sources are not sufficient to establish every detailed transfer of jurisdiction or building history for Ssangyong.

The Diocese of Andong currently lists Ssangyong Mission Station under Gaeun Parish. The historical line that can therefore be stated with confidence is its establishment in 1893 and its continuing existence as a mission community of Gaeun Parish today. The intervening details should be supplemented only when stronger sources become available; avoiding unsupported dates or construction episodes preserves the history of this mission station more accurately.

Although public sources do not preserve every intermediate stage of Ssangyong's history, the record of its establishment in 1893 confirms that an organized Catholic community existed in Nongam-myeon long before a parish was established in the Gaeun area. This is an important indication that mission stations already formed the local foundation of Catholic life before a parish-centered pastoral network developed.
