Ssangho Mission

History & origins

The Catholic community of Ssangho began to take shape in the lives of believers who settled there while fleeing persecution, even before a mission station was formally organized. An academic study indexed in KCI concludes that the village was formed through the settlement of Catholics during the persecution period and that a mission station was established in 1891. It was originally called Cheongho-ri Mission Station. After the 1914 administrative reorganization merged Cheongho-ri and Doho-dong and created the place name Ssangho, the Church continued to use the name Cheongho for a time before Ssangho became established in the 1920s.

The mission station's parish jurisdiction changed with the development of Church structures in the region, passing through Naksan, Toegang, Yecheon, Andong, Dain, and Angye. This shows how one rural faith community endured through the creation of new parishes and repeated jurisdictional adjustments in northern Gyeongsang Province. The Diocese of Andong's historical record notes an enlargement of Ssangho Mission Station on August 15, 1934, and also records that the Japanese Government-General requisitioned the mission-station building in April 1945, demonstrating the pressures experienced by the community near the end of the colonial period.

After liberation, Ssangho took on new roles as rural society changed. Academic research and the Catholic Times describe the mission station as an important base for the Catholic farmers' movement from the 1970s and as a community that later developed life-community activities and environmentally responsible agricultural practices in the 2000s. The community thus responded to the concerns of its time by bringing questions of farming, livelihood, and social justice into its lived faith.

Today Ssangho Mission Station continues its Catholic-village tradition under Angye Parish. The path from its late nineteenth-century organization, through hardships under colonial rule, to farmers' movements and life-giving agriculture shows that Ssangho is not simply a place preserving an old building, but a community that has practiced its faith within the daily life of local residents.
