Sinseong Mission

History & origins

The mission stations of the Nakdong-myeon area, including Sinsang, were organized within the pastoral network of Namseong-dong Parish during the restructuring of Catholic parishes in the Sangju area in the 1960s. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that Namseong-dong Parish of the Diocese of Andong was separated from Sangju Parish and established in 1963, with Sinsang, Nakdong, Yongpo, and Sangchon among its mission stations. Within this setting, Sinsang took shape as one of the local communities through which the new parish could provide closer pastoral care to Catholics in the surrounding countryside.

The Korean Catholic Directory records the establishment of Sinsang Mission Station in March 1966, and the Diocese of Andong's sacred-art guide likewise gives its foundation as “around March 1966.” Because these two sources point to the same period, the formal establishment of the mission is relatively clear. The diocesan art guide also dates the murals “Annunciation” and “The Risen Jesus and the Disciples” inside the mission station to 1965. This suggests that preparation of a Catholic worship space in the area was already under way shortly before the formal foundation, but the source does not explain precisely which stage of the building first received the murals, so that sequence should not be asserted.

After its establishment, Sinsang continued as a mission station of Namseong-dong Parish, an affiliation still confirmed by the Diocese of Andong's current list. Its historical character lies in two well-supported features: a nearby liturgical community was created for rural Catholics as the Sangju parish network expanded in the 1960s, and sacred art from the period of its formation has survived into the present. Details about architects or the exact process by which the murals were created are not inferred where official sources do not state them; the history is therefore centered on the confirmed foundation period, the surviving sacred-art record, and the continuity of its parish affiliation.
