Shinsan Mission Station

The Korean Catholic Directory records November 17, 1952, as the establishment date of Sinsan Mission Station. According to oral-history material collected by the Diocese of Andong, Catholics in Sinsan were already holding mission-station services in a room of a private home before a formal mission building was available. Roads and transportation were limited, so believers walked not only to Dain but also to Gunwi or Toegang to receive the sacraments, and when a priest came to the mission community the faithful themselves welcomed him and prepared for Mass and sacramental celebrations. These records show that Catholic life around the time of the foundation depended heavily on travel and common prayer in homes.

The community's liturgical space was also not completed all at once. Local testimony remembers a period when the village hall was used as the mission station, followed by the construction of a mud-brick building that was later repaired and replaced. The physical development of Sinsan thus took place in stages according to the needs and resources of the community. The progression from a room in a home to shared village space and then to a simple mission building illustrates clearly that the community existed before a permanent structure defined it.

The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Dain Parish records the construction of a new Sinsan mission building on August 10, 1975. Testimony collected by the Diocese of Andong likewise remembers that Fr. Rogerius sought assistance abroad and built the mission station in 1975, so the two sources support the conclusion that a new liturgical space was created in this period. The history of Sinsan thus runs from a small postwar faith community, through years of walking long distances for the sacraments and using temporary spaces, to the establishment of a building that the community could use more permanently.

Sinsan subsequently continued as a mission station of Dain Parish within the rural pastoral network of the Diocese of Andong. Details such as specific early founders or oral claims that the community is “more than one hundred years old” are not treated as established facts because they are not verified by documentary sources. Even within the confirmed chronology, however, Sinsan shows a continuity across generations of home prayer led by laypeople, the effort of traveling for the sacraments, visits by priests, and the gradual creation of spaces for communal worship.
